Tweedsmuir Park Lodge
- Grizzlies, Grizzlies and more Grizzlies This was a return trip for me after 11 years, and it was as great as ever. The Bella Coola Valley is like something out of Lord of the Rings. Just magical in its beauty. My wife and I splurged and went for a 7 night private package. This allowed us time to completely explore the valley. Beyond the incredible river drifts and nature walks, we were able to take a boat ride up the fiords where we saw a humpback whale and went to a remote hot springs, and also drive up to Purgatory Lookout at the end of the Nusastsum Forest Service Road through the incredible high alpine. But I would have to start with the guides and staff. They are incredibly friendly, helpful, welcoming and informative. The food at dinner was gourmet, and breakfast was a feast. The main attraction of the lodge is its proximity to the Bella Coola Valley's prime Grizzly Bear habitat and the Atnarko river. We saw Grizzly Bears every day, and had a few close encounters(safe ones) on our river drifts. They are magnificent animals, and after spending 7 days with them, I felt as if I had experienced something very special. We took a walk(mostly bush wacking) in to "Kettle Deep" on the bear trails with Ellie, and ran in to not one, but two bears. It was exhilirating. We also made friends with other guests who were great company. Go if you can!read moreread lesswafski10/10/2022

- Just the most amazing place I write this review with sadness in my heart. Sadness that I had to leave such an amazing place full of wonderful people and captivating wildlife. I want to be back there! Tweedsmuir Park Lodge is in a wonderful location with picturesque views every way you turn. The property itself is a lovely mix of rustic and modern and everything is well cared for, clean and charming, with touches of luxury throughout. There’s a viewing platform on the grounds which you can use to hopefully spot bears when you’re not out and about spotting them elsewhere (we went in late September, prime bear viewing season!). We had a few good sightings there, and more when out on the great river drifts and eco walks. I don’t want to give too much info here as part of the fun is experiencing all this for yourself, but the river drifts were so relaxing too! We also saw a bear walk through the property which was quite an experience. My wife and I had paid for a personal package so went out by ourselves plus a guide each time. It meant we could be flexible about where we went and what we did, as well as being stealthy due to the smaller group size. What turns Tweedsmuir from a great place into a truly wonderful place though is the people that work there. We found everyone so friendly, knowledgeable, funny and caring. You'll meet Doug straight away and he’s a bundle of energy! Fun and informative he gets you off on the right track. Then you’ll meet the staff in the main lodge who are so warm and welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble for them and you look forward to seeing them every mealtime and having a chat.
Talking of mealtimes, special mention must be given to the chef and kitchen staff who we didn't meet, but never failed to deliver fabulous food. You will eat well here!
And of course there’s the guides! We had trips out with Ellie, Jessib, Karla, Bryn and Woody (not forgetting our 101 with Doug!). All have unique personalities but share the same mixture of warmth, friendliness and deep knowledge. I could write loads about each but as mentioned above, the fun is finding your own way at Tweedsmuir and making those connections. They were all a joy to be with.
Special mention too to Susie – a lovely artist in residence for the week we were there. We took part in her painting sessions and thoroughly enjoyed our time with her. We’ve made a new friend and will enjoy keeping in touch.
If I had to pull up any negatives, it would be that there was a bit of a mixup with our room – we had booked a standalone cabin but ended up with a duplex so were attached to someone else. The room was still lovely, but it did mean you could hear sounds from next door so wasn’t quite as private. Whether this was the mistake of our travel agent or Tweedsmuir I’m not sure. However seeing as everything else exceeded our expectations this is still a 5/5 review from me!
I hope Tweedsmuir keeps up their standards and retains the brilliant staff. With the wrong people this could be a by-the-books experience, but as it stands it’s something very special indeed. - Magical in every way My wife and I completed a 4 day 3 night stay on September 4. In summary, this is an extraordinary Lodge in every conceivable respect. The Lodge and grounds are beautiful. The Lodge is enveloped by the river, trees and spectacular mountains. Our cabin was picturesque from the outside and exceptionally comfortable inside (incl. the king size bed). We spent fun time with people from Great Britain and Germany. We took advantage of the nice wine and beer list and even enjoyed a martini or two. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all delicious and varied (don't pass on the blueberry waffles). We saw numerous grizzly bears in and out of the river and other wildlife in spectacular surroundings. The float trips with Krista and Woody were educational and serene--as was the grizzly viewing as we floated down the river. They both know the river and its wildlife and happily conveyed their knowledge to the guests. Ellie's eco-walks were another highlight. She has spent years observing the bears, cares deeply for them, and conveys her knowledge and experiences in a fun and enthusiastic manner. The manager and her co-workers in the Lodge are top-shelf in every respect. They always have a smile on their faces and they go overboard to make guests feel welcome. They are excellent ambassadors for the Lodge. Finally, my wife and I both had a terrific massage. A special, magical place. Go. Moreread moreread lessjohnmJ4917VV9/05/2022
- Beautiful experience! From the first minute we arrived at Tweedsmuir, we were greeted and shown to our spotless cabin, which included everything we could possibly need. The food was not only delicious but had a beautiful presentation and we never felt hurried. Our trips during the day were exciting with gorgeous vistas and peeks at country that most people never see. Our guide was an extraordinary man who is familiar with the people, animals, and plants of the area. We enjoyed visiting with him and looking at the views and wildlife and plant life. We enjoyed relaxing outside our cabin at the end of the day and looking at the beauty that surrounded us. Massages were perfect!

During the entire stay we felt like specially invited guests in Alyson and Marshall’s lovely home. Everyone was so attentive to our wishes, needs and wellbeing. Before going, none of us mentioned archery or shooting as areas of interest. Once at Siwash we signed up for these activities and ended up finding them extremely enjoyable and excellent activities for the entire Family. Again the guides were the reason this worked out so well for us.

The experience was intimate, rich and led us to reconnect with ourselves, each other and the beautiful nature around us. The team is passionate about sharing their way of life with their guests. I felt like I was staying with family instead of at a hotel, even though they had all the amenities of a luxury resort. There was a big fire in the area surrounding the ranch in 2017. The regrowth happening now is a once in a lifetime sight to behold. I'm so glad we were able to see it before it all grows back. The forest looks like artwork with carbon black tree trunks surrounded by a sea of pink/purple flowers, golden grass and young greenery. - Star Quality!! Amazing. Starting with the highlight-Star Camp is spectacular. Your own private getaway in an already amazing resort. We had four of us in the two tents. Not your normal tents, these two are a fine hotel room under canvas with a view to the starry skies. From sitting at the campfire, roasting marshmallows and 'smores for all, to the wood fired hot-tub (always wanted one of these at home) all under a vast starry sky, it is all an unbeatable experience. Then when climbing into the wonderful bed, lying back and settling in for the night, a glass roof above your head while you drift off. While lying back, comfortable, to look up at the sky it is truly like floating in space. Incredible.
As others have said, every small item has been thought through. Stargazing binoculars to add another dimension of wow to the stars, and when it starts to get light in the morning, before you're ready, a mask to let me linger.
The setting of the ranch is like nowhere else, away from all distractions, but with lots to do. I could have spent much more time there.
Yes, a fire has passed through, but it is amazing the resilience of the land, how green it is, and how much recovery has already taken place. It is a type of beauty I have never seen before and provided photo ops at every turn.
We are not particularly experienced riders so the knowledgeable calm with which the instruction and actual ride was conducted gave us the confidence to focus on enjoying the ride without worry. Wonderful horse selection for each of us.
All the activities are excellent, and then you start to anticipate your next meal, knowing it will be something special, because it always was.

Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort
- An Open Letter to all those who have visited Nimmo Bay or are considering it I've said this before and I can't say it any better. When I travel to Nimmo Bay next year, it will be my 22th consecutive year of visiting. Over those years I’ve purchased over 200 3- and 4-day trips for myself and my friends. I know Nimmo Bay pretty well. I’ve read all the reviews. People are amazed at the glaciers, wildlife and waterfalls. Me too. But I’m even more amazed at Craig and Deb Murray who scratched and carved this experience out of the wilderness for us all. We will never know all the hardship, difficulties and challenges the Murray family faced. People love the whale watching and sea lions. Me too, but I’m more impressed with how Fraser and Becky have transformed Nimmo Bay into what it is today. Visitors write about watching mamma bear and cub, eagles flying almost at your fingertips, pristine rivers filled with salmon, bathing in a waterfall, lunch on top of a solitary mountain via a helicopter and 20,000-year-old glacier ice for our cocktails. I see a staff of young dedicated and talented people who never blink at any request. They warm a blanket by the fire before covering you up with it. Your wine glass never gets empty. These people are extraordinary. I see people behind the scene who make sure that I have electricity and hot water in the middle of a wilderness. How does that happen? Who are these magic... I've said this before and I can't say it any better.
I see extraordinarily talented heli pilots flying between mountain tops. Pilots who guide and patiently teach me how to fish. Tie my hook. Release my fish. Become real friends.
I see people who have faced challenge and adversity and persevered.

Difficult to describe. Beautiful surroundings, great outdoor activities of kayaking paddle boarding swimming fishing, hot tub, sauna ( very private ones in secluded spots on the water) masseuse (2) and great hosts, 5 star staff including chef, sommelier, bar tenders etc etc. Very friendly and down to earth and very attentive to all their guests. If you had 10 stars it might not be enough. Everyone of us is still talking about it. We’ve done a lot of travel in our lives but none compares to this vacation. - Incredible Experience I spent three and a half days at Nimmo Bay with my 17-year old son at the beginning of August. My expectations were very high, both in light of the reviews I'd read, and the cost...and the experience was above and beyond anything I could have imagined. Nimmo Bay is unique among the travel/adventure experiences I've had, combining incredible remoteness with luxury. The setting, nestled deep within the coves off the BC coast, is breathtaking, lush green forests running down to the water on all sides, with the bungalows set on a spit of land next to a waterfall that serves as the perfect soundtrack, day and night, and the rest of the buildings set on floating docks. The luxury is less so in the facilities, which are wonderful, but in the personalized attention and curated activities, and the attention to detail throughout. Every effort was made for us to experience what we came for (lots and lots of wildlife viewing), and every staff member we spent time with was friendly and knowledgeable and focused on our experience. In addition to seeing all the incredible wildlife we'd hoped for, we got to wakeboard and snorkel, both of which will be some of our most memorable memories from the trip. - Wilderness Magic. Our expectations were high, so we could only be disappointed! Not at all…it went on to deliver above and beyond. Don’t expect luxury lodges, they are clean and very comfortable, but everything else delivers at the 5star level and the location is 6star!
The isolated sauna on the water, the hot tub experience and that roaring waterfall illuminated, as you return to your lodge are just few of the special features.
What comes out of the kitchen is amazing and is tasty, healthy and presented beautifully. The wine list superb and the staff friendly and attentive.
One area of improvement? No obvious “manager” of the resort, that is customer facing, at the occasional time when everyone arrives in the restaurant together and inexperienced staff need help. - Unbelievable!! I can't say enough good things about our experience at Nimmo Bay .... and it is an experience, not a stay. And it t was an unbelievable experience from the minute we landed by sea plane. The location is breathtakingly beautiful and so remote. The 'property' is stunning and becomes home very quickly. The food & drink were Michelin star worthy. But the best part about this place is the staff and activities. A big shout out to all the staff but in particular we can't thank Kyle, Will, Dan & Dallas enough. It was amazing how quickly they got a sense of what you liked to do and Will planned 4 amazing days for us. In particular they made my birthday very special. Started out with a paddle around the sound where we saw a bear on the waters edge. Next we made our way to the remote floating spa where we had a nice leisurely lunch with champagne and then it ended with a trip to the bear net to see a grizzly playing with salmon in the creek. I could go on and on about how amazing this trip was ... everyone needs to experience Nimmo Bay at least once in their lifetime. From the second you arrive to your final goodbye-waves, your time at Nimmo Bay will be handcrafted and magical. The attention to detail at Nimmo Bay is next to none. The food and drinks are spectacular. It’s clear so much thought goes into each local ingredient and each wine pairing. The guided hikes and excursions, the stunning luxury and stillness of the floating hot tub and sauna, and private instruction in things like yoga and flying fishing are all at your fingertips. The surroundings to these experiences are the pristine Great Bear Rainforest, the waters that surround it, and all of their incredible inhabitants (think grizzly bears and humpback whales!). But, despite all of this, it’s the Nimmo Bay staff who take your experience to the next level; what incredible people. Their knowledge about the local ecosystem and all of its beauty — and their willingness to share it — cannot be replicated. - Exclusive and romantic for 2 I started planning a “ surprise “ trip for my boyfriend in May during many travel restrictions and uncertainty. Growing up on Vancouver island, the surrounding islands, we both have a genuine love and passion for the Pacific Northwest, a love for adventure, good food, and privacy.
Nimmo Bay exceeded every hope and wish, they made this experience one I could never duplicate, no matter how many times I return or travel the world.
To start, I was hoping for an oceanfront cabin, but they were already spoken for. We were in a rustic cabin with fabulous linen bedding and the comfiest bed of all time.
I chartered a float plane direct from where we live to avoid a 3 hour drive, and we hopped aboard and enjoyed the scenery!
Coming into Nimmo Bay for the first time , is a site. Excitement, happiness , just basking in its beauty from above….
Landing we were greeted by most of the team , and brought to our cabin for the first time!
We had daily meetings with staff with lunch menu and daily activities and options— all catered to exactly what we wanted!
We were eating well thought, delicious and locally sourced fine dining quality meals and spirits.
Day one we did a wilderness tour aboard a very fine and comfortable vessel , we checked out artifacts , wildlife, whales , birds and scenery. Our captain was an amazing human who truly connected us to the Nimmo spirit and beyond. He is a genuine human being and we are very grateful for our time getting to know him!
The special individual touches are above and beyond what you will find anywhere else. Once they know what your flavour is, they impress , they shine above any expectation!
We had a private picnic on beach, alone with the ocean, the waves and eachother.
Adventures on the daily , picnic lunches in locations you couldn’t imagine —- is the regular every Nimmo Bay.
Destination kayaking , destination paddle boarding , floating hot tub, floating sauna, couples massage and the ultimate—— full day heli glacier tour… where I proposed to my amazing and wonder fiancé!!!!!!!
The Nimmo Bay staff did incredible, from surprising me with a photographer to secretly document our day ( take nature shots ) , soothing my nervous soul, advice from the heart and keeping it all a big fat surprise from my unexpected partner.
We flew alone to the most remote , desolate inhabited areas around the BC Coastline , saw around 100 waterfalls, rivers , and the most beautiful glacier. We had a picnic lunch, enjoying the unbelievable scenery and best company.
When I popped the question , and he said yes, the best feeling came about me. It was infectious.
The helicopter tour was…. Truly remarkable in every way.
Becky and Fraser, you have a beautiful family and we are changed forever from our weekend away in Nimmo Bay. Looking forward to seeing you all again!

- Trip of a Lifetime Our experience at Seal River Lodge was amazing and couldn't have been better! Being in the Canadian Arctic is remarkable, made the more so through Churchill Wild's perfect blend of polar bear encounters, overland hikes, zodiac excursion on Hudson Bay (to view the Beluga whales), and viewing the supernatural northern lights.
The Churchill Wild staff - guides and lodge personnel - made our trip a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They were knowledgeable, hospitable and engaging. Seal River Lodge was very comfortable and thoughtfully designed to take best advantage of the remarkable scenery and wildlife. The food was delicious and rivals what you'd find in a fine big-city restaurant.

Every effort is made by the whole team to ensure all guests have the best experience ever, and we most definitely did.
We LOVED everything. Of course wildlife viewing was our number one priority, the guides are so knowledgeable, work incredibly hard, safely and patiently to ensure u have the best chances of seeing everything this place has to offer . This includes fascinating tundra walks , trips out in the zodiac, the use of All Terrine Vehicles to take us across the tundra and evening talks which were so helpful and informative . All exciting and magical .
However what makes this experience even more special is the effort ( although it appear effortless ) the team back at the lodge make to ensure every is taken care of . Nothing is too much trouble . Every where immaculately clean and comfortable , the food delicious, fresh, plentiful and served with a smile . Everything is so well managed , all supplies, the electricity, heating, water both drinking and for the lovely hot showers and more . An amazing team effort. THANK YOU all and an extra thanks to those who work the night shift just in case the northern lights turn up ,which very happily they did.
We will be living off the memories for many months/ years .

I’ve done the tundra buggies, and slept out on the Tundra in the cars with bunks. I’ve been to the Arctic on a ship and viewed the bears on the ice from the ship. From day 1 we were immediately greeted by two families of bears, several of which got very close! Even walking out amongst the bears on foot, you don't ever feel a sense of danger; the trained guides are well-experienced in polar bear behavior and are able to react to the bears appropriately to keep the visitors safe (also important, they try to limit the influence the humans have on the animals to keep them safe as well). As I said, we did not have any problem seeing plenty of bears; however, even if I hadn't seen any I still would have considered it a wonderful experience based on how amazing the lodge is. Clean rooms, wonderful views, delicious foods, and stellar service by the incredible staff make the polar bear experience even more enjoyable (not to mention the multiple safeguards to keep the bears from getting onto the compound). Additionally, we were fortunate to have a beautifully clear night to get amazing photos of the Aurora! In short, this is the place to be for Polar Bear safari’s. Both Lodges, Seal Lodge and Nanuk Lodge, are at the edge of Hudson Bay. Once the migration of the bears gets into full swing as the ice forms you are in the right spot. Both are comfortable, the rooms are well appointed and the public areas in the lodges are very roomy, with comfortable sofas, lots of picture windows, as well as porches to sit on or just get outside to see the bears. There are raised viewing areas at Seal Lodge on the bay side and both lodges have a tower you can get an elevated view from.
The meals were excellent. We never ate the same thing twice. They are a combination of local and Winnipeg sourced food which they fly in weekly, the lodges are nowhere near Churchill so you and everything else is flown in, which is a fun way to arrive there. We had 10 people on our tour so we were 5 people in each plane that normally holds about 9. The windows are large and easy to get pictures out of as we did in Nanuk (more later). There are three meals every day and even with the 3+ miles a day you might walk you can easily gain weight.
The guides are excellent with two assigned at each lodge and Seal had four because there were two trainees. But, in terms of knowledge it was hard to tell who was a trainee. Every one of them knew everything and they all know how to deal with polar bears. We got as close as 50 feet, maybe less, as one cub got curious and decided to walk over to us. But it is amazing how with words and a few small rocks thrown in their direction lessens their interest with us. Walking with Polar Bears was safer than walking down a dark alley at home.
We saw our first bears within 6 minutes of getting off the plane and walking to Seal Lodge. A mother and her cub. The second day another mother with her two cubs joined us. So we had 5 bears, permanently, devoted to entertaining us. They were there when we got up, they were there throughout the day, though they did walk around and many time to the same places we were walking to. When we were behind our fences, or in back on the raised platforms you didn’t need a telephoto lens for your pictures of a lifetime.
But, that was our allotment of bears. They were there all the time, but no other bears came. In a way that was a blessing in disguise. We also happened to be there during an unusual warm spell. Temperatures hit a high of the low 40’s and never got below 30 with most lows about 35 to 40.
Then we flew to Nanuk where the departing group had seen no bears. They did see foxes, rabbits, moose and other wildlife, but no bears. We had less luck and did not see a single Moose. We spent of lot of time hiking about, and wore boots continually as there is a lot of water and muck to walk through, looking for Moose. We learned how to call a Moose. We never found one.
But Nanuk too was a great lodge. The staff was excellent. The meals excellent. The organization excellent. The training and procedures were well thought out and everything ran smoothly. The owner of the company lives at Nanuk with his wife and children. And he had a gift for us. One of the planes they lease was headed back to Churchill but had no schedule set to leave. So he organized two flights for us. Five per flight. Everyone with a window seat. A guide up front as lookout. Each flight flew East for 15 minutes and then back West over the same path, low enough so one could the blades of grass. And through the flight we could hear the guide yelling out “Bears on the right”, “Bears on the Left”, “Moose, White Fox”, etc. In total we saw a dozen or more bears in groups, lots of Moose, and were able to get good pictures even moving at 140 MPH.
It may not have been the best way to see them, but we did see them, and it’s just another example of the care for the customers that we saw throughout the tour.
I can highly recommend Churchill Wild for an unforgettable trip. They are highly organized and everyone obviously cares for their guests.
Weather is always a gamble and going later in October, or better in November will increase favorable weather conditions, but in the end animals are animals and you can’t always force them to show up.

They stayed around the lodge the entire 4 days we were there and put on a show every day. We saw them swimming, playing together, the cub nursing and playing with logs. The following day a mother and her 2 yr old twin cubs showed up and we had them also hang around the lodge for the entire 4 days. What a special experience to see them all up close. We also saw an arctic hare, arctic squirrel and red fox. The lodge was beautiful, comfortable and the staff, guides and food were excellent. We were most impressed with the guides, all of whom were excellent and had interesting stories.
Ben & Nicole, the lodge managers, were wonderful and ensured that everyone had a great time. We were fortunate to see the awe inspiring northern lights our first night. Everyone thought they were a '10'. We had several other nights where they also made an appearance but the first night was so special. We highly recommend Churchill Wild and their wildlife encounters. We did in fact see, and photograph, birds, bears and belugas, but it was the staff that really made the trip a success for us. Our small group of 14 guests was outnumbered by the attentive staff. Kitchen and housekeeping staff were always friendly and on top of our comfort and appetites, but the three men who lead the walks / rides really made the difference. They were our teachers, protectors, and for the week, friends. They could quickly call us by name. They dined with us, and taught us while walking and at casual evening discussion / slide show sessions. Their own varied backgrounds, so very different from ours, gave us each a very different perspective on world wide travel. Wetter than typical weather necessitated running schedule changes on short notice, but we were never without interesting topics to be seen, enjoyed, and discussed. Our group was represented by multiple countries and ages from a young teenager to those of us in our 70's, including a family with three generations traveling together. In addition to learning about the local wildlife, we learned about each other.
This was a wonderful trip. Moreread moreread lessK1739AKbobm7/03/2020 - The Best I have visited a number of centres on photography trips in the winter but this is ny favourite. The Lodge, on the edge of the Hudson Bay, is extremely comfortable and the warmth of the building is matched by the warmth of the staff who are there to greet you and look after you during your visit. The location is very beautiful and the opportunities to see and photgraph wildlife very good. The guides who take you on the walks are extremely knowledgeable and your safety is paramount. I am astounded how such wonderful food is provided in such an isolated location. This is a great Lodge, staffed by highly skilled and supportive staff. The team work so well together. The weather in the winter can be challenging, but this is part of the sub Arctic experience. An great experience and not to be missed.read moreread lessrkay24126/04/2020
- A Very Special Place Churchill Wild has been recommended to us by a friend, who was very excited about their lodges. Therefore, our expectations for this trip in November 2018 were very high. But our first trip to Seal River Hertiage Lodge even exceeded our expectations. We first boarded our Calm Air flight from Winnipeg to Churchill and were greeted there by members of the Churchill Wild staff. We then continued on a small Caravan plane to the lodge.
At the lodge, we were greeted by our guides and the wonderful staff like we were family. The lodge is very comfortable and cozy and we immediately felt at home. The main attraction for sure is to be able to encounter polar bears on ground level, without any fences in between. This is an incredible experience!
But it is by far not the only highlight: There is plenty of other wildlife, from snowy owls to foxes to ptarmigans. And then, there are the northern lights. The guides will alert you, when these are visible, which in our case made for two short nights…
The food at the lodge is delicious. Breakfast options are hot and cold cereals, eggs, fruit, homemade bread and sometimes a surprise special. Lunch and dinner is served family style and every single meal was delicious. We enjoyed many nice discussions with our fellow travellers and with our guides and hosts during these meals and in front of the cozy fire place.
The lodge is very comfortable, especially given it‘s remote location directly on the coast of Hudson Bay. You have running (hot and cold) water, 24 hour electricity - and plenty of extra blankets and hot water bottles, should you feel cold at night.
The only negative aspect: leaving this place after 4 days doesn‘t feel right…! We will definitely be returning in the future.read moreread lessarcticwild15/28/2020 - Nature and its Cycles that challenge wildlife and tourists. I have been fortunate to be able to visit Churchill Wild Lodges for 8 continuous years since 2012. Wildlife is my life and I am privileged to have been involved for more than 30 years. In my short experience I have learnt that you are at the mercy of the weather. Something that is unpredictable even if you choose the best possible dates at prime times for your holiday.
In the time of visiting Churchill Wild lodges from Seal River to Nanuk Lodge the weather has always dealt a different set of conditions.
What I have experienced in my short time have been two early freeze ups and two years of very warm weather late into the season. The other 4 years were what the locals would say are normal predictable weather seasons.
When there is an early freeze the polar bears are in heaven meaning they can go out onto the ice and start hunting for seals. They have been slowly starving from June for nearly 6 months. With a longer warmer season the polar bears really suffer, desperate to get out and eat some of the weaker bears will not survive the winter when this happens.
So last year 2019 it was an early freeze and the bears were not waiting for anything or anyone at the first opportunity they were out onto the ice leaving the coastline, the lodges and guests including me. In 8 years this was the first time I did not see a bear while staying at a Churchill Wild lodge.
Understandably the guests were very disappointed having travelled so far for a dream experience. Thanks to Churchill Wild pulling out all the stops against tough weather conditions we were able get out of the lodge early and luckily see some of the last few bears around Churchill Town.
Nature and its cycles had disappointed us guests, not Churchill Wild, who run a first class ecotourism operation and did everything possible for every guest to at least see a wild polar bear!read moreread lessIanJohnsonSafaris5/26/2020 - Amazing Experience Seal River Lodge was awesome, albeit freezing! The accomadation is good, food was homestyle, plenty of it & really good. The lodge is lovely to just relax in by the fire & really enjoyed watching the Arctic Foxes playing around the lodge. It was very exciting when a polar bear appeared, either coming from a distance or just showing up at the window. I found it a bit challenging going on our hikes in the deep snow, with heavy gear on, but that was probably coming fromAustralia, & not being used to those conditions. All in all a great experience, just wish I had been better prepared to see the Northern Lights, eg better at using my camera & having a proper tripod & being prepared to put up with freezing fingers!read moreread less541jennya11/25/2019

- Luxurious Polar Bear Experience Expensive and remote, but the Seal River Heritage Lodge is worth both the effort and the money. Inside there is great comfort, and truly fine meals. Outside, on the tundra (as winter approaches), there are polar bears to see, as well as ptarmigans, arctic hares and snowy owls. We even saw a wolf at a distance, and a few other critters. Guests walk around the tidal flats and tundra near the Lodge, guarded by up to three capable, friendly and knowledgeable guides who are also armed guards. They specialise in animal psychology which means they read and respond to the bear's body language in a way which defuses any too close approaches. We saw this happen, and they do it well. It's truly amazing to be on the ground with the bears, not locked inside a tundra buggy. Highly recommended, and the travel necessary to get to Seal River is an adventure in itself.read moreread lessmikei87311/12/2019
